Sonography KUB (Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder)

Sonography KUB, commonly known as a renal ultrasound or USG KUB, is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to evaluate the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It utilizes sound waves to produce detailed images of these urinary tract organs, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of various renal and urinary conditions such as kidney stones, cysts, tumors, or obstruction.

Indication

Sonography KUB is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as flank pain, blood in urine, or urinary tract infections. It is also indicated for the evaluation of kidney function, urinary tract abnormalities, and monitoring of renal conditions. Additionally, it is used for diagnosing and guiding treatment decisions for renal and urinary tract disorders.

Why it is done

  • Renal Health Assessment: Assessing the structure and function of the kidneys for abnormalities such as kidney stones, cysts, or tumors.
  • Urinary Tract Evaluation: Evaluating the ureters and bladder for conditions such as obstruction, inflammation, or tumors.
  • Kidney Stone Diagnosis: Detecting the presence of kidney stones and assessing their size, location, and composition.
  • Renal Disorder Diagnosis: Diagnosing conditions such as hydronephrosis, renal cysts, renal masses, or urinary tract infections affecting the kidneys and urinary tract.
  • Follow-Up of Known Kidney Stone/Tumor: Monitoring known cases of kidney stones or tumors to assess changes in size, location, or composition over time and guide treatment decisions.
  • Abnormal Renal Function Tests (RFT): Investigating abnormalities detected on renal function tests, such as elevated creatinine or urea levels, to identify underlying renal conditions or urinary tract abnormalities.

How to Prepare for Test

To ensure a successful Sonography KUB, we recommend the following preparations:

  • Comfortable Attire: Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing any jewelry or accessories that may interfere with the ultrasound examination.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to your appointment to ensure proper hydration.

  • Full Bladder: A full bladder is required for the KUB test to evaluate the urinary bladder thoroughly, unless it is not possible due to some medical conditions. The bladder needs to be optimally distended for accurate imaging. If your bladder is over-distended and causing discomfort, you may be asked to empty a small portion of urine. Conversely, if your bladder is suboptimally distended, you may be asked to wait until it becomes full before proceeding with the test.

Please note fasting is not necessary for the KUB test.

What to Expect
During the Scan

You will lie down on an examination table, and a water-based gel will be applied to your abdominal area. Radiologist will then move a handheld device called a transducer over the skin to capture images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

Common Conditions
Detected by
Thyroid Sonography

  • Kidney Stones: Solid mineral deposits that form in the kidneys and can cause pain and urinary symptoms.
  • Renal Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs within the kidneys, which may be benign or require further evaluation.
  • Hydronephrosis: Swelling of the kidney due to obstruction of urine flow, often caused by kidney stones or other urinary tract conditions.
  • Bladder Conditions: Including bladder tumors, urinary retention, or bladder stones.
  • Ureteral Obstruction: Blockage of the ureters, which can lead to kidney swelling and impaired urinary drainage.
