Sonography Chest

Sonography of the chest, commonly known as a chest ultrasound or thoracic ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to evaluate the structures within the chest cavity. It utilizes sound waves to produce detailed images of the chest organs, including the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of various chest conditions such as pleural effusion, pneumonia, or chest masses.

( Also known as )

Abdomen and Pelvis

Indication

Sonography of the chest is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or abnormal chest findings on physical examination. It is also indicated for the evaluation of chest trauma, respiratory conditions, and monitoring of chest abnormalities. Additionally, it is used for diagnosing and guiding treatment decisions for chest disorders.

Why it is done

  • Pulmonary Assessment: Assessing the structure and function of the lungs for abnormalities such as consolidation, effusion, or tumors.
  • Pleural Evaluation: Evaluating the pleural space for conditions such as pleural effusion, pneumothorax, or pleural thickening.
  • Mediastinal Examination: Assessing the mediastinal structures for abnormalities such as lymphadenopathy, masses, or cysts.
  • Trauma Imaging: Detecting and assessing chest trauma, including rib fractures, pneumothorax, or hemothorax.

How to Prepare for Test

To ensure a successful chest ultrasound, we recommend the following preparations:

  • Comfortable Attire: Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing any jewelry or accessories that may interfere with the ultrasound examination.
  • Personal Items: Bring any relevant medical reports or previous imaging studies for comparison.
  • Fasting or Full Bladder Not Required: Unlike some other medical tests, fasting or having a full bladder is not necessary for a chest ultrasound. You can eat and drink as usual before the test.

What to Expect
During the Scan

You will lie down on an examination table, and a water-based gel will be applied to your chest area. The radiologist will then move a handheld device called a transducer over the skin to capture images of the chest organs, including the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum.

Common Conditions
Detected by
Thyroid Sonography

A chest ultrasound can help diagnose a variety of conditions affecting the chest area, including:

  • Pleural Effusion: Accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and chest wall.
  • Pneumonia: Infection or inflammation of the lungs, often characterized by consolidation or fluid accumulation.
  • Chest Wall Abnormalities: Assessment of chest wall swelling, masses, or trauma-related injuries.
  • Lung Masses or Nodules: Identification and characterization of abnormal growths within the lungs.
  • Pleural Thickening: Thickening of the pleural membrane, often associated with inflammation or scarring.
  • Abscesses or Infections: Detection of fluid collections or infectious processes within the chest cavity.
