Thyroid Sonography

Sonography of the thyroid, commonly known as a thyroid ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to evaluate the thyroid gland. It utilizes sound waves to produce detailed images of the thyroid, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of various thyroid conditions such as nodules, inflammation, or enlargement.

Indication

Sonography of the thyroid is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as neck pain, swelling, or thyroid nodules. It is also indicated for the evaluation of thyroid function and other thyroid abnormalities. Additionally, it is used for monitoring thyroid disorders and guiding treatment decisions.

Why it is done

  • Thyroid Health Assessment: Assessing the structure and function of the thyroid gland for abnormalities such as nodules, cysts, or tumors.

  • Thyroid Disorder Diagnosis: Detecting conditions like thyroid nodules, goiter, thyroiditis, or thyroid cancer affecting the thyroid gland.

  • Treatment Planning: Providing valuable information for diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of thyroid conditions.

How to Prepare for Test

To ensure a successful thyroid ultrasound, we recommend the following preparations:

  • Comfortable Attire: Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing any jewelry or accessories around the neck.

  • Bring Headphones: Consider bringing headphones to enjoy calming music or entertainment during any potential wait.

  • Carry a Fresh Napkin: Bring a fresh napkin or small towel to clean off the ultrasound gel after the scan.

  • Personal Water Bottle: Feel free to bring your own water bottle for added convenience.

Please note that a full bladder or fasting is not required for this test.

What to Expect
During the Scan

You will lie down on an examination table, and a water-based gel will be applied to your neck area. The Radiologist will then move a handheld device called a transducer over your neck to capture images of the thyroid gland.
